What is "Listening Mode"?

Vocab Deck:

In Listening Mode we hide the Spanish word from the front of the flashcard, and replace it with audio.  Listening Mode is designed to help train your ear by relying on audio alone, rather than reading.

Conjugation Deck:

Listening Mode is handled slightly differently in the Conjugation Deck.  On the front of the flashcard you will hear the conjugated form of the verb, and the goal is to quickly identify the verb, tense, and pronoun.

Why are the Translations in the Conjugation Deck Hidden?

In order to conjugate verbs quickly, we recommend that you avoid the following process:

By hiding the definitions, we hope to help you avoid this slow and cumbersome process.  If you do want to see the translation however, simply tap and the translation will be revealed.

What are Vos/Vosotros in Spanish?

"vos" and "vosotros" are regional variations for addressing people in Spanish. "Vos" replaces "tú" in certain Latin American countries, while "vosotros" is used in Spain for informal plural address (similar to "you all" or "y'all"). They are considered optional or unnecessary in regions where they are not part of the local dialect.

To simplify the learning process, we will not show you these pronouns by default.  If you want to see them in the Conjugation Deck, you can enable them in settings.

Are there any Usage Limits?

We currently limit our daily flashcard interactions at 198 new cards + reviews per day for each user (99 vocabulary cards and 99 conjugation cards). Our spaced- repitition algorithm is designed to promote long-term memory retention, eliminating the need for cramming, and our studies show that exceeding this limit leads to rapid user review fatigue and language study abandonment. If you feel strongly that you would like to increase your review limit beyond that threshold, please contact us via the Contact page and let us know your motivations intensive study and we can increase this limit on an individual basis. Thanks for your understanding.

Spanish Language

Will learning vocabulary through mnemonics be bad for my pronunciation?

No, in fact, science shows using this method may actually help with pronunciation. The mnemonic images help specifically with the cognitive process of word retrieval or speech production. This process takes place in an area of the brain called Broca's area that is separate from the area used for word pronunciation (the auditory and motor cortices). There is a saying in neuroscience: "Neurons that wire together fire together." When you study a Palazzo card, you are hearing the audio of that word in a Spanish accent while you are looking at the mnemonic, and this strengthens both the word finding pathway and the pronunciation pathway simultaneously. So the next time your brain is searching for the right word to use in your target language, the neural pathway for pronouncing that word correctly will be more likely to accurately fire in parallel leading to improved pronunciation in addition to improved vocabulary recall.

How did we categorize verbs as regular, stem-changing, or irregular?

Verbs were identified as regular or irregular as outlined in the most recent version of Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española published by Real Academia Española and were individually verified by native speakers. We would like to emphasize that there are some instances where a verb may have an irregularity that deviates from the predicted pattern dictated by typical Spanish verb conjugation rules but utilizes a standard Spanish spelling change in order to maintain the word’s pronunciation. Words that undergo these spelling changes may still be considered ‘regular verbs’ as outlined in the abovementioned guidelines. Likewise, some words with an irregularity only in the past participle may still be considered ‘regular’.

A subset of irregular verbs undergo predictable patterns of irregularity to their stems, referred to as stem-changing verbs. Specifically, stem-changing verbs are defined in the Palazzo app as verbs which undergo a predictable change to a vowel(s) in the verb’s stem which is reflected in the pronouns yo, tú, él, ella, Ud. ellos, ellas, Uds. in the present tense, subjunctive mood, and imperative mood. Additional changes may also be present in a systematic way for -ir verbs specifically in the present participle, preterite tense, and imperfect subjunctive mood. The stem changes commonly incorporated are ‘e to ie’, ‘e to i’, and ‘o to ue’, though less common vowel changes were also included if they perfectly fit the pattern of vowel changes in the verb stem for the same pronouns and tenses. A full definition of the stem-changing verb pattern will be outlined in detail in an upcoming Palazzo Grammar Video.

What about the “Irregularity” images in the Conjugation Deck?

The irregularity image is displayed only when the verb ending differs from the regular predicted verb ending. Whatever irregularities may or may not be in the stem does not affect the irregularity tag being displayed. The images in the conjugation deck reference characters that specifically provide visual mnemonics to help you remember the verb’s ending, so if the verb is irregular and the ending is different than predicted, the video palace character will not be helpful in that case and the irregularity card will be displayed. However, even for highly irregular verbs, there are many conjugations where the ending is accurately predicted by the video palace character, and in those instances an image of the character is displayed to reinforce the ending, even if the verb has an irregular stem.
